YARIE Split Ring Pliers

Split ring pliers exist to solve one small, constant problem: opening the tiny coiled rings that connect hooks, blades and snaps to a lure without destroying them. The tool has a hooked, tapered nose on one jaw that slides into the gap of a split ring and levers the coil open just far enough for a hook eye or another ring to be fed on, while the jaws hold the ring square so the coil opens in its own plane rather than being twisted out of shape. YARIE offers this pattern in three models — the 802 in L, the 913 (Split Ring Pliers 2) in M, and the 798 JP — so the size of the nose can be matched to the size of ring you actually use, from tiny trout-spoon rings up to heavier saltwater hardware.

How To Use It

• Enter the gap, do not squeeze the ring — Find the step where the coil overlaps, slide the tip of the hooked jaw into that gap, and close the handles. The plier tip lifts one coil clear; you are prying, not crushing.
• Slide the new part on — With the coil held open, feed the hook eye, swivel or second ring into the opening and rotate it around the coil until it seats. Release the handles slowly and let the ring close on its own.
• Never force it — If the ring resists, the tip is in the wrong place or the ring is too small for that model. Levering harder opens the coil past its elastic limit and the ring stays sprung — permanently weakened, and the first thing that will straighten on a good fish.
• Match the model to the ring — A nose that is too thick will not enter a small ring; one that is too fine will flex or slip out of a heavy saltwater ring and can spring back at your hand.
• Look after them after salt — Rinse in fresh water, dry, and put a drop of light oil on the pivot and spring after every saltwater session.

A fingernail or ordinary pliers will open a ring, but at a cost: nails split and hooks snap back at fingers, and flat pliers grip the outside of the ring, scratching the finish and bending the coil out of plane. A dedicated tool enters the gap cleanly, leaves the ring round and keeps your fingers away from the point.
