YAMAI SUTEKI - HIGH POWER MABOROSHI SN HOOK RINGED/FLATTED JIGGING FISHING HOOK MADE IN JAPAN
Yamai Suteki High Power Maboroshi SN Hook — Ringed / Flatted Jigging Hook, Made In Japan
This is the bare Maboroshi hook, sold loose so you can build your own assists and plugging rigs rather than buying them pre-tied. It is drawn from a special high-carbon steel Yamai produces specifically for lure fishing — a material the company describes as difficult to control in manufacturing, but right for the job once mastered. The shape is settled for jigging: the shank is slightly longer than the SPT503 and the gap slightly narrower. That longer shank is deliberate — tying an assist needs shank to tie onto, and Yamai's position is that longer works better on jigging rigs.
Heat treatment shapes it as much as the fishing does: the profile lets heat enter the steel evenly, and the point sits at a distance and angle from the eye arrived at through fishing rather than drawing. Silver finish, medium-heavy and heavy wire.
The choice between the two types is a rigging choice. Ringed gives you an eye to run a split ring or solid ring straight through — the quicker option, and the one most anglers use when swapping trebles for singles on plugs. Flatted ends the shank in a pressed flat instead of an eye, so an assist cord seats against the flat and cannot slip off; that is the option if you are tying your own assists.
Key Features
- Special high-carbon steel produced specifically for lure fishing
- Shape settled for jigging: slightly longer shank and slightly narrower gap than SPT503
- Long shank gives room to tie an assist cord
- Two types: Ringed (eyed) and Flatted (pressed shank end)
- Silver finish; medium-heavy and heavy wire
- Sizes #1/0 to #4/0
- Used for light jigging, offshore jigging and casting games
How To Rig It
- Tie your own assist (Flatted) — Whip PE or fluorocarbon cord onto the shank so it seats against the flat, finish with a press ring, and slide a protective tube over the wrap. Set the finished length to a third or half of the jig body.
- Split-ring straight on (Ringed) — Run a heavy split ring through the eye and hang it directly from the jig or plug. This is the fast route and the one to use when converting a plug from trebles to singles.
- Single hooks on plugs — Fitted front and rear on a stickbait or popper, singles hold well in hard mouths and do far less damage to fish, nets and hands.
- Size to the lure, not the fish — #1/0–#2/0 for light jigs and smaller plugs; #3/0–#4/0 for offshore jigs and full-size casting plugs. On a plug, the hook must not be able to reach the other hook hanger.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Gerepoh (giant trevally), tenggiri (Spanish mackerel), grouper (kerapu) and red snapper (ikan merah) on reef jigging and popping trips.
- North America — Amberjack, grouper and snapper on wrecks; yellowtail and rockfish on the Pacific coast; tuna on offshore casting runs.
- Japan & East Asia — Buri, hiramasa, kanpachi and tuna on jigging and casting game; recommended by the maker for yellowtail, kingfish, GT and yellowfin.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Kingfish and samson fish off Australia; queenfish and GT in the Gulf; pollack, cod and bluefin on European marks.
