The Anglar Prawn Hooks with Counterbalance Sinker — Stand Type 4227 / Lean Type 4226

Every other prawn hook in the Anglar range is a bare hook: how it lies on the bottom depends on the bait, the leader and luck. These two decide it for you. Each carries a small triangular counterbalance sinker moulded at the bend, and that weight does three jobs — it takes the bait down with no sinker on the line, it stops the rig drifting off the spot in light current, and, being placed off-centre, it makes the hook settle in a known attitude instead of flopping flat.

That attitude is the whole reason the pair exists, and it is the only choice you have to make between them.

• 4227 Stand Type — the sinker forms a flat base, so the hook stands up off the bottom with the bait raised and the point clear. Prawns find it easily and there is nothing under the gap to block the hookset. Take it on clean sand, gravel and hard pond bottoms, and any time a flat-lying bait keeps disappearing into silt or leaf litter.
• 4226 Lean Type — the sinker sets the hook at an angle, leaning rather than standing. The bait sits lower and moves more naturally with the water, which is the quieter presentation for prawns that have been fished over and are refusing an upright bait. It is also the steadier of the two in moving water.

Both are offset-point hooks, which matters here: a prawn takes the bait, feels the hook and turns away, and an offset point is already angled across that pull. Both carry a sharp barbed point and a ringed eye, and both come in four sizes, each paired with its own sinker weight.

How To Rig It

• Fish it as the whole terminal rig — Tie straight to the ringed eye with no sinker, swivel or bead. The built-in weight is the sinker; adding another cancels the posture the hook is built to hold.
• Let it land and leave it — Lower or lob it in, let it settle, then take up only the slack. It needs a few undisturbed seconds to find its attitude.
• Bait it small — A short piece of worm, prawn flesh, chicken breast or fish belly on the shank only. Bait wrapped over the bend blocks the gap and stops both models working.
• Reading the take — Prawns tap and pull rather than run. Wait for steady weight, then lift smoothly — a hard strike pulls the bait out of the claws.
• Switch type, not size, when bites stop — If an upright bait is being ignored in a fished-out pond, change from the 4227 to the 4226 before changing hook size.
