THE ANGLAR - PRAWN HOOK 4209 PRAWN FISHING
The Anglar Prawn Hook 4209
The 4209 is the ring-eye hook among the shorter Anglar prawn patterns. Set against the 4208 the two match exactly — same seven sizes, #7 up to #1, same pack ladder falling from twenty to thirteen as the hook grows — but the 4208 ends in a flattened spade and the 4209 ends in a ring. That removes the snelling step: any ordinary knot holds and a damaged trace can be re-tied on the bank. The rest is prawn-specific — forged high-carbon wire, a chemically sharpened point set off the centreline, a pronounced barb, and a compact curved bend under black nickel.
Key Features
- Ringed eye — accepts any standard knot, no whipped snell required
- Forged high-carbon body, stiff through the bend
- Chemically sharpened offset (kirbed) point for contact on a side-on take
- Pronounced retaining barb that holds through a prawn's tail-flick
- Black-nickel coating — dark, low-glare, corrosion-resistant
- Seven sizes, #7 to #1; pack count rises from 13 to 20 as the hook gets smaller
How To Rig It
- Knot at the ring — A snug knot pulled onto the ring gives the most direct pull. A small loop knot lets a light bait swing on the drop, which helps when prawns are picking rather than grabbing.
- Float rig for prawns — Small float, one micro shot, bait set just clear of the bottom. Let the float dip and travel before lifting; a prawn draws bait in slowly and a fast lift pulls it out of its claws.
- Bait around the bend, point proud — Thread worm or prawn flesh onto the shank and press it into the bend, leaving the offset point clear. An offset point only earns its keep with nothing in front of it.
- Lift, do not sweep — A smooth lift into a loaded rod sets this hook; a hard strike on slack line rips a soft prawn apart.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) in Malaysian and Indonesian rivers, tiger prawn (udang harimau) in brackish water, and the stocked prawning ponds (kolam udang) of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. #1 and #2 also fish live prawn for barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack.
- North America — A compact worm and shrimp hook for panfish, perch and stocked trout, and small live shrimp under a float inshore.
- Japan & East Asia — Tenaga-ebi (long-arm prawn) on rivers and canals, and Taiwan's indoor prawning ponds.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Prawn and yabby baits for bream and flathead in Australian estuaries; shrimp in the Gulf; worm and maggot on European coarse venues.
