Santec Oyako Crane Swivel 7924 Black Nickel

Oyako (親子) is Japanese for "parent and child", and that is what this swivel is: a three-way swivel with one large parent eye and one smaller child eye, joined by a crane barrel that keeps turning under load. It is the standard way to take a dropper off the main line: main line to the top eye, sinker to the bottom eye, hook trace off the side child eye — so the branch hangs clear instead of being knotted into the running line. Six size pairings are offered, each combining a parent and a child size.

How To Rig It

• Standard dropper rig — Main line to the top parent eye, a short length to the sinker from the bottom eye, and the baited trace off the child eye. The bait then stands out to the side, above the lead.
• Multi-hook paternoster — Space two or three oyako swivels up the rig body, each carrying one trace. Keep every trace shorter than the gap to the next swivel or they tangle on the cast.
• Break-off sinker link — Tie the sinker to the bottom eye on line lighter than the rest of the rig. In rock and coral you then lose only the lead, not the whole rig.
• Choosing the size — Read the pairing as parent x child. The /0 pairings (#3/0 x 2/0, #2/0 x 1) are for heavy bottom, boat and surf rigs; the plain numbers (#4 x 5, #2 x 3) are the light end for estuary, pond and light shore work.
