The Santec 7900 is a fastach-style clip, supplied in four sizes from #0.6 to #0.9 on the maker's scale. It is not a sprung snap: the clip is a shaped wire with an open spiral, and the lure eye threads onto it with a short twist, the way a split ring loads but far quicker. Nothing has to be prised open, so the change is made one-handed, in the dark, without pliers. That makes it the fastest of the common lure connections, and it lives on rods where the lure changes every few casts — light game, ajing, area trout and small metal jigs. The trade is that an open spiral relies on the lure eye staying seated in the coil, so it belongs on light and medium tackle.

How To Use And How To Choose

• Fitting a lure — Rotate the lure eye down the spiral until it sits in the closed section. Pull firmly before casting; if it slides back out, the clip is too large for that eye.
• Where it goes — At the leader-to-lure end only, tied on with an improved clinch or uni. It does not swivel, so add a separate swivel up the leader if the lure rotates.
• Which connection for which job — Fastach for the fastest change on small lures, a plain B snap for a quick change on light and medium gear, a crosslock snap when the clip must not open under a big fish. Change speed at one end of that line, holding security at the other.
• When the clip is the weak point — Heavy loads, sustained head-shaking and thick or oversized lure eyes can work the eye back around the spiral. Step up to a locking snap for heavy jigs, big topwaters and hard-pulling saltwater fish.
• Salt water care — Rinse and dry after saltwater sessions, and replace any clip whose spiral has opened out after a fish.
