The Santec 7923 joins a crane swivel to a crosslock snap, supplied in seven sizes from #6 through to #3/0. The crosslock is the security option among snaps: the wire arm crosses back over itself and seats inside the closed loop, so the clip is held shut from two directions instead of one. It takes a moment longer to open than a bent-wire snap, and that is the point — a crossed-and-seated arm is not prised apart by a head-shaking fish or worked loose by hours of current. The crane swivel behind it keeps turning under sustained load, so the fitting suits trolling, heavy lures and hard-pulling saltwater fish.

How To Use And How To Choose

• Leader to lure or trace — Improved clinch or uni to the swivel eye, lure on the snap. Check the arm is fully crossed and seated before you cast; a half-closed crosslock is no stronger than a plain snap.
• Which snap for which job — Take a crosslock when the clip must not open: big fish, heavy jigs, trolling, long drifts in current. Take a plain B snap for a quick one-handed change on light gear, and a fastach-style clip when swapping small lures constantly. Every step towards a faster change costs holding security.
• Trolling and rotating lures — Fit it between leader and lure on anything that spins. If twist still reaches the reel, add a second swivel a metre up the leader.
• Sizing — #6–#2 for light estuary lures, #1–#1/0 for medium inshore work, #2/0–#3/0 for heavy jigs and bottom traces. Undersize it and the snap fails first.
• Salt water care — Rinse after every saltwater trip. Corrosion at the crossing point stops the arm seating cleanly, and a snap that will not seat should be replaced.
