The Santec 7933 joins a barrel swivel to a safety snap, in twelve sizes from #12 up to #5/0. A barrel swivel is the first rung of the swivel ladder: two eyes swaged into a plain barrel body, no rolling element inside, the simplest and cheapest form there is. It sheds the mild twist that bait rigs, sinkers and slow-turning lures create, but rotation slows once heavy load is on it. A crane swivel keeps turning under sustained load, and a ball-bearing swivel turns most freely of all at the highest cost. Choose the barrel where twist is moderate and you need a lot of connectors in the box.

How To Rig It

• Leader to lure or trace — Uni or improved clinch to the swivel eye, lure on the snap. Push the wire fully past the retaining bend; a safety snap left resting on the bend is not locked.
• Float and dropper rigs — In #12 to #8 it joins a hooklength to the main line under a float, keeping the trace from wrapping and letting you change hook size in seconds.
• Sinker and bottom rigs — Hang the sinker off the snap so weight can be changed as the tide builds, leader knotted to the swivel eye above.
• Sizing — #12–#6 for float and light freshwater rigs, #4–#1 for general estuary lure work, #1/0–#5/0 for heavy jigs, big baits and bottom traces. Undersize the fitting and the snap fails first.
