S.A.S Pencil CX 80mm 7g Floating Fishing Lure

The Pencil CX is a surface lure, designed to work on top of the water rather than beneath it, imitating a small baitfish fleeing or struggling on the surface. The slim 80mm pencil body is what makes it walk: rhythmic twitches on a slack line swing the nose left and right in the side-to-side glide anglers call walk-the-dog. What separates it from a plain pencil is the recessed mouth at the front, which catches and pushes water, so the same lure will also pop and spit when you strike the rod tip down harder. An internal rattle adds sound under both actions, which matters on a choppy surface, in stained water and at dawn and dusk. At 7g it is light enough to control on bass and light estuary tackle, and belly and rear trebles cover the slashing, missed-and-returning strikes that topwater fishing produces.

How To Fish It

• Walk-the-dog — Point the rod tip down at the water and give short, rhythmic twitches, taking up slack between each one. The slack is what lets the nose swing; a tight line kills the walk and drags the lure straight.
• Pop and pause — Strike the tip down harder so the cupped mouth throws water, then leave the lure sitting still. Count to three. Fish that followed the walk without committing will often eat it on a dead stop.
• Fish it at first and last light — Surface lures are most effective in low light and on calm mornings. Cast to boils, bait scatter and the shaded side of structure.
• Do not strike on the splash — Wait until you feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook. Striking at the sight of the boil pulls the lure away from fish that have not taken it.

• 6–7 ft medium spinning or baitcast rod with a fast tip — the tip does the walking, so avoid a soft, through-action blank
