Megabass X-120 SW 121mm 12.5g Slow Floating Minnow

The X-120 SW is the saltwater build of the X-120, a shallow-running minnow aimed squarely at shore-based seabass fishing. The body is deliberately slim and light at 12.5g to keep air resistance to a minimum, which is what lets a lure of this weight cast like a much larger minnow — and it stays stable in flight rather than helicoptering. The small tip bill sets the diving depth at roughly 40cm, the feeding band seabass work when they push bait against the surface. Action is a tight wobble-and-roll that holds together across an unusually wide retrieve-speed range, from a very slow crawl through to a medium-fast wind, so you can search a flat and then slow down over a hot spot without changing lures.

How To Fish It

• Slow steady wind — The default. Cast, close the bail and wind just fast enough to feel the bait working. Its slow-floating buoyancy means you can pause without it dropping into snags.
• Drift the current seam — Cast up-current at a river mouth or breakwater gap and let the flow swing the lure across the seam with only occasional turns of the handle.
• Twitch and float — Add two short twitches, then stop and let the bait rise slowly. The lift often draws fish that have followed without committing.
• Rod tip high — Over shallow sand, rock or weed, retrieving with the rod tip raised keeps the lure in the top of the water column and off the bottom.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap) at river mouths and jetty lights, queenfish (talang) and juvenile giant trevally over shallow flats, and mangrove jack along rock walls.
• North America — Striped bass in the surf and in estuary rips, snook around bridge and dock lights, speckled trout and redfish over shallow grass.
• Japan & East Asia — Japanese seabass (suzuki) on shore-casting sessions, the fishery this model was designed for, plus hirame and flathead from sandy beaches.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Tailor, Australian salmon and barramundi off headlands and northern estuaries; queenfish and golden trevally on Gulf flats; European seabass over shallow reef and harbour walls.

• Shore-casting seabass rod of 8' to 9'6" rated around 10–30g, with a 2500–3000 size spinning reel
• PE 0.8–1.5 braid with a 16–25 lb fluorocarbon leader of one to one and a half rod lengths
• Step the leader to 30–40 lb around barnacled pilings, oyster racks and rock walls
