The TR Baby Frog packs 9g into a 4cm body — about 2.3g for every centimetre of length, the highest loading of any lure in the Luresfactory topwater family and more than double that of the 6cm MF Mini Walk. That concentration of weight is what the lure is for. It casts like something much bigger than it looks, holds its line into a headwind that stops lighter frogs dead, and reaches the far bank of a canal or the back of a wind-blown pocket from a standing position. It also sits low. Two rotating metal blades are mounted in front of the body, and because the body rides deep in the film rather than skating on top, the blades stay buried and keep throwing flash, vibration and a broken surface wake instead of spinning dry. The trade-off is worth knowing: this is not a lure you can creep. It needs a positive, continuous retrieve to keep the blades turning, so it is a searching bait for stained water and low light, not a finesse presentation. A silicone skirt pulses behind the body and a strong rear double hook sits close in, which lets it travel through grass and light surface cover with less exposure than an open treble — though no lure is completely snag-free.

How To Fish It

• Start winding on splashdown — Begin the retrieve the instant it lands so the blades come up to speed immediately. If you let it sit, the dense body settles and the first metre of the retrieve is wasted getting it planing again.
• Steady medium-fast retrieve — Find the slowest speed that still keeps both blades turning and stay there. Watch for the blades breaking the surface; that steady tick is what fish home in on.
• Cast into the wind — This is the lure to reach for when a breeze has shut down your lighter frogs. Its density lets you punch across an open reservoir arm or down a canal in a straight, low trajectory.
• Bump the cover — Run it along grass walls, reed stems and timber so the blades clip the edges. The change of rhythm when it deflects triggers a lot of strikes.
• Dawn, dusk and dirty water — Flash and vibration earn their keep where a silent frog goes unnoticed. Fan-cast murky bays, paddy drains and stained inflows and let the lure find fish for you.
