That is the practical case for a novelty profile: where fish have learned to refuse the standard surface shapes, an unfamiliar outline and an unfamiliar wake will often draw the commitment a conventional lure no longer gets. Rhythmic rod-tip twitches send it side to side, and the internal rattle adds sound so fish can locate it in stained water, low light or a chop.

How To Fish It

• Walk the dog — Point the rod tip down toward the water, keep a little slack, and give short rhythmic downward twitches while taking up line between each. The slack is what lets the head swing; a tight line kills the side-to-side.
• Vary the cadence — Alternate a steady walking rhythm with a burst of three or four fast twitches, then a long pause. Sitting still after a commotion is what most often triggers a follower.
• Work the edges of cover — Cast parallel to weed lines, pad fields, timber and rock walls and walk it along the margin so it stays in the strike zone throughout.
• Choose your light — Dawn, dusk, overcast days and calm evenings suit walking baits. In flat glare, fish shaded banks and overhanging cover.
• Let the fish take it — On a blow-up, keep the rod low and do nothing for a beat. Only when the rod loads with the weight of the fish should you sweep sideways; striking at the splash pulls the trebles from an open mouth.
