The MF Cicada is a compact hard-body surface lure shaped like a cicada that has fallen onto the water, rather than a frog or a baitfish. That matters: in Southeast Asia and in Japan the cicada is a genuine seasonal food source, and fish looking up under a tree line will take an insect shape after ignoring everything else. At 4cm and 6.2g the lure carries about 1.6g of weight for every centimetre of body — the second lowest figure in this family and well under half the loading of the 4cm TR Baby Frog. In practice it lands with very little disturbance, floats high with the wing pattern showing, and can be left completely still without settling. Insect markings and a bright top make it easy to see, and flexible silicone skirt strands spread on the pause so the lure keeps twitching when the rod is not moving. Rear double hooks sit close against the body, giving less exposure than an open treble around light grass, though no lure is completely snag-free.

How To Fish It

• Land it and leave it — Cast tight to an overhanging branch, let the lure sit motionless for five to ten seconds, then move it. A real cicada that has just dropped in does very little at first.
• One twitch, long pause — Give a short pull to make the skirt flare and the body shudder in place, then stop again. Repeat down the length of the shade line rather than winding straight back.
• Work the shade line — Fish the strip directly under bankside trees and drooping branches. Keep casts parallel to the bank so the lure stays in that strip for the whole retrieve.
• Fish the cicada season — Cicadas are loudest through the hot months, and windy afternoons knock them onto the water. When you can hear them in the trees above you, try this shape first.
• Steady wake retrieve — On coloured water or a chop, wind slowly and continuously so the body pushes a small wake. It covers ground when sit-and-wait is too slow.

• Japan & East Asia — Black bass in mid-summer, when anglers fish the semi (cicada) pattern under trees on reservoirs and canals; also dace and other surface-feeding river fish on light gear in Korea and Taiwan.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass and sooty grunter under bank timber in creek pools; chub and asp in European rivers, both of which feed heavily on surface insects. In the Middle East it is a freshwater reservoir and canal lure rather than a saltwater one.
