Little Jack Unicorn Plate 17g / 21g / 28g Saltwater Plate Vibration

The Unicorn Plate is a thin plate lure that behaves as two different lures depending on which eye you tie to. The body is roughly 90 percent lead alloy, and because lead is denser than the steel used in most plate lures, the same casting weight fits into a smaller, flatter shape. Less air resistance means longer casts on shore tackle, and the slim plate falls without helicoptering or tangling. Two tie points are moulded into the back: the rear vibration eye holds the lure at range and drives a tight, high-frequency anchovy-style vibration, while the front unicorn eye tilts it into a plug or sinking-pencil attitude for shallow work and retrieves at a breaking school.

Key Features

  • Lead alloy plate construction (roughly 90 percent lead) for casting distance from a compact body
  • Two-way eye system: rear eye for vibration, front eye for a plug or sinking-pencil action
  • Thin plate profile that falls straight with little line tangling
  • Works on a straight retrieve, lift and fall, or fast high-speed jigging

How To Fish It

  • Rear eye, slow roll above bottom — Let it hit bottom, wind up a few turns and hold a slow retrieve so you can just feel the vibration. Mix in tension falls to the bottom every ten turns.
  • Rear eye, lift and fall — Sweep the rod up sharply, then follow the lure down on a controlled line. Most bites come on the drop as a slack-line tick.
  • Front eye at a breaking school — Cast past the boil and use a fast, straight retrieve just under the surface so the lure runs with a wider, flatter roll instead of a tight buzz.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Queenfish and trevally off breakwaters and river mouths, barramundi (siakap) in tidal channels, and small mackerel over inshore reef.
  • North America — Striped bass, bluefish and false albacore from beaches and jetties, plus redfish and flounder on deeper channel edges.
  • Japan & East Asia — Shore seabass (suzuki), flatfish (hirame, magochi), horse mackerel (aji) and pelagics such as yellowtail (hamachi) and Spanish mackerel (sawara) on shore jigging tackle.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Tailor, salmon and flathead off Australian beaches; queenfish and barracuda on Gulf coasts; bass, pollack and mackerel from European rock marks.
