Little Jack Hirenaga Koiki 63mm Topwater Popper

The Hirenaga Koiki puts two topwater presentations into one small body. The open cup mouth spits and chugs off a short rod stroke, while the oversized rear propeller chops the surface on a straight wind and keeps turning on the smallest twitch. Moving eyes scatter light, a water duct channels flow through the head, and a feather dressing keeps breathing while the lure sits dead still. At 63mm and 8g it loads a light rod properly, and suits shallow flats, jetty lights, rock walls and reservoir edges where a full-size popper is more than the fish are feeding on.

Key Features

  • 63mm body at 8g — sized for light game and light shore tackle
  • Open cup mouth that pops, spits and chugs on a short stroke
  • Large rear propeller for surface disturbance and flash on a straight retrieve
  • Water duct through the head to channel flow across the body
  • Feather dressing for standing-still appeal during pauses
  • Supplied with #8 hooks
  • Seven color patterns across natural, high-visibility and metallic finishes

How To Fish It

  • Short-stroke popping — Rod tip down, take up slack, two or three sharp low strokes so the cup spits, then stop. Most takes land in the first second of the pause, so do not wind straight away.
  • Prop wake retrieve — Wind steadily, just fast enough for the propeller to turn and leave a bubble trail. This is the searching presentation for calm mornings and flat evening tides.
  • Twitch and dead-stick — Twitch once, then leave it motionless three to five seconds and let the feather work. Effective over shallow structure and around lit jetty edges at night.
  • Skip under cover — A low sidearm cast skips the lure under pontoons, moored hulls or overhanging mangrove; open with a single pop.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Hampala barb (sebarau) on reservoir points, small barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack in timber and mangrove roots, queenfish and small trevally (gerepoh) off jetties and rock walls.
  • North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass on shallow flats and docks, plus schooling striped bass, ladyfish and speckled trout on inshore surface feeds.
  • Japan & East Asia — A light game (raito ge-mu) topwater for small seabass, mebaru and chinu around harbours, and for small trevally busting bait on summer mornings.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass and bream in estuaries; queenfish and small trevally on Gulf flats and breakwaters; perch, chub and asp on European rivers and canals.
