Little Jack Ayukawa Kou 80mm Floating Lipless Minnow

The Ayukawa Kou is Little Jack's lipless floating minnow, a shad-shaped 80 mm / 8.4 g plug designed to hold a shallow, natural line just under the surface. With no lip to force it down, the head shape and the water flowing through it do the steering: an open mouth-to-gill duct stabilises the body and adds a subtle flow sound, so the lure holds a tight rolling action from a crawl to a fast retrieve, running roughly 20 to 50 cm below the surface. A dual weight-transfer system slides the internal weights back on the cast for distance into wind, then returns them forward so the lure works immediately. Jerked, it flashes and turns sharply, triggering reaction bites from fish shadowing it. Finishes run from sardine and mullet patterns through ultraviolet keimura to full glow, including #08 Black Chi Ayu, named after the juvenile ayu (sweetfish).

Key Features

  • 80 mm / 8.4 g floating lipless minnow with a realistic shad profile
  • Open mouth-to-gill water duct stabilises the body and adds flow noise
  • Runs in the shallow 20–50 cm band below the surface
  • Dual weight-transfer system for long, accurate casts
  • Jerks into a sharp flashing turn for reaction strikes

How To Fish It

  • Slow steady swim — The default at night and in current: cast across, wind just fast enough to feel the roll, and let the flow swing it through the strike zone.
  • Jerk and pause — Two sharp downward jerks then a stop. The lure flashes sideways and rises slightly as it floats, and fish that were following usually commit on the rise.
  • Drift into structure — Because it floats, stop the retrieve and let it drift back over shallow bars, weed tops and rock without fouling, then wind again.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — A general small-baitfish minnow here: barramundi (siakap) on mangrove edges and river mouths, mangrove jack and small queenfish off jetties, and hampala barb (sebarau) and peacock bass in clear reservoirs.
  • North America — Striped bass and speckled trout on shallow inshore flats, plus largemouth and smallmouth bass over shallow rock and weed.
  • Japan & East Asia — Built as a seabass (suzuki) lure. Ayu are a seasonal key here: when spent ayu drop downriver in autumn, river-mouth seabass fishing turns on the ochi-ayu pattern and finishes such as Black Chi Ayu are aimed at that window. Also takes black sea bream (kurodai / chinu) in harbours.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass, bream and flathead in estuaries; small queenfish on Gulf flats; European bass, perch and asp on rivers, canals and coastal shallows.
