Umitanago (海タナゴ) is the Japanese seaperch — a small, deep-bodied fish that lives tight to rocky shores, harbour walls and weed beds, feeds on tiny crustaceans and worms, and bites with barely a movement of the float. The hook named after it is built to that scale: very small, very fine in the wire, slim in the shank and straight in the point, so it disappears inside a scrap of bait and slips into a small hard mouth with almost no resistance. The 4783 is Hinotsu's flatted version — chemically sharpened needle-cutting point, forged bend, pressed spade end, black-nickel finish. Eight sizes, #4 to #11, fifteen pieces per pack. This is Japanese ultralight bait fishing in its purest form, and it travels well: in Southeast Asia the same hook is a jetty small-fish and prawn hook.

How To Rig It

• Snell to the spade end — There is no eye. Lay the line along the inside face of the shank, whip six to eight turns toward the bend, pass the tag through and seat it slowly with a wet knot. On 1–4 lb line a rushed knot is what breaks, not the hook.
• Tiny baits only — A single small worm section, one grain of shrimp meat, a sliver of prawn or a maggot. Leave the point clear; a hook this size loses hook-ups the moment bait covers the gape.
• Fine float rig on structure — A slim float, one or two micro shot, bait held just above the rocks, weed or piling. Watch for the float to lift or slide rather than dip — small fish often take upward.
• Lift, never strike — Raise the rod smoothly until you feel weight. A sharp strike on this wire either pulls the hook straight out of a small mouth or straightens the point.
• Sizing — Japanese gō numbering, so the number rises as the hook grows. #4–#6 for the smallest mouths and finest baits, #7–#9 for general light work, #10–#11 where the fish or the bait is a size up.

• Southeast Asia — Jetty and river-mouth small fish: ponyfish, small croaker (gelama), juvenile bream, glass perch and gobies; also pond and river prawns (udang galah) where a very fine, discreet hook out-fishes a heavier prawn pattern, and small live baits taken for bigger rigs.
• North America — Bluegill, crappie, yellow perch and other panfish on a single maggot or worm tip; pinfish, pigfish and small croaker taken off piers for the bait bucket.
• Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: umitanago (seaperch) from harbour walls and rocky shores in the cool months, plus haze (goby), small aji and freshwater tanago on fine float rigs.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Garfish, small whiting and juvenile bream around Australian jetties; small rabbitfish and bream on Gulf breakwaters; roach, rudd, bleak and gudgeon on European canals and rivers.
