HINOTSU - SODE HOOK PACK FLATTED 4797 FISHING HOOK
Hinotsu Sode Hook Pack Flatted 4797
Sode (袖, "sleeve") is the Japanese bait shape for fish that bite softly and have small mouths: a slim shank, a narrow gape, and a point that runs straight rather than curving in. With so little metal across the gape, the hook enters a cautious mouth with almost no resistance, which is why it converts the tentative bites a wider pattern pushes away. The 4797 is Hinotsu's flatted-shank Sode — needle-cutting point, forged bend, pressed spade end in place of an eye, low-visibility bronze finish. Thirteen sizes from #4 to #17, twenty pieces per pack throughout.
Key Features
- Sode profile — slim shank, narrow gape, straight point aligned with the pull
- Needle-cutting point for fast penetration on a light take
- Forged bend to resist opening under load
- Flatted (spade) shank end for a compact snelled connection
- Bronze finish for a subdued, low-glare presentation beside natural bait
- Thirteen sizes, #4 to #17, twenty pieces per pack in every size
Flatted versus ringed — the one real difference in this pair. The 4797 and the SH-2 4762 are both Sode hooks; what separates them is the shank end. Flatted means the end is simply pressed flat, with no eye at all. Nothing sits above the shank, so the rig stays slim, the knot is compact and the pull runs straight down the wire into the point — made for fine line, roughly 2–8 lb mono or fluorocarbon, tied as a snell. A ringed eye, as on the 4762, trades that slimness for a connection that takes a heavier leader or a snap. The size spans differ too: the flatted 4797 runs #4 to #17, the ringed 4762 covers #6 to #15.
How To Rig It
- Snell it — a clinch knot will slip off — Lay the line down the inside face of the shank, whip six to eight turns toward the bend, pass the tag back through the loop and tighten. The line must leave on the inside so the pull lines up with the point.
- Worm, prawn and paste — Thread a worm up the shank so it lies straight, nick a live prawn once through the tail segment so it keeps kicking, or mould paste around the bend leaving the point just proud.
- Light float or short paternoster — Fish it under a small float just off bottom, or on a fine dropper above a running sinker. Lift steadily as the line tightens; Sode hooks set on tension, not on a hard sweep.
- Sizing — Japanese gō numbering, so the number rises as the hook grows. #4–#8 for small pond and river fish, #9–#12 for general bait work, #14–#17 for larger baits and mouths.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Tilapia, javanese carp (lampam), small catfish (keli) and pond prawns (udang galah) on paste and worm; ponyfish, whiting and small bream from jetties.
- North America — Bluegill, crappie and yellow perch on worm or maggot, small bullheads, and shiners taken for the livewell.
- Japan & East Asia — The pattern's home water: funa (crucian carp), oikawa (pale chub), haze (goby) and tanago on delicate float and bottom rigs.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Garfish, yellowfin bream and whiting from Australian jetties; small rabbitfish on Gulf breakwaters; roach, rudd and perch on European canals.

Bronze plating suits fresh water and short saltwater sessions — rinse and dry opened packets after a coastal trip.
Recommended Pairing
- Light float, feeder or hand-line bait rod with a 1000–2500 spinning reel
- 2–8 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon, snelled direct or onto a fine dropper
- Micro split shot and a fine-stemmed float; heavy shot kills the low-resistance advantage of the pattern
- Choose the SH-2 4762 where you want a ringed eye for a heavier leader or a clip-on rig
