Hearty Rise Aluminum Sleeve AS-10

An aluminium sleeve, or crimp, terminates a line that will not hold a knot or where a knot would be the weak point. Slide the sleeve on, pass the tag end back through to form a loop, and compress the barrel with a crimping tool: the soft aluminium flows around the line and locks it mechanically. The Hearty Rise AS-10 uses high-quality aluminium with an extra-thick wall, so it takes the full squeeze of a crimping tool without splitting, and the surface is specially polished to leave nothing sharp against cord or leader. Hearty Rise specify it in particular for building their light-power slow-jigging assist hooks, where the crimp forms the cord loop carrying the hook and the solid ring. It works the same way on single-strand wire and heavy monofilament. Two sizes, #L and #LL.

How To Rig It

• Use a proper crimping tool — Crimping pliers with matched jaw grooves compress the barrel evenly. Side-cutters or standard pliers flatten the sleeve, cut into the line and leave a joint that fails under drag.
• Double crimp for security — Place two compressions along the barrel, spaced apart, rather than one heavy squeeze in the middle. Two shorter crimps hold better and strain the line less at any one point.
• Size the sleeve to the line — The sleeve should take both passes of line snugly. Too large and it will not grip; too small and both passes will not fit. Step between #L and #LL accordingly.
• Building assist hooks — Pass the cord through the sleeve, around the hook eye or shank, and back through. Set the loop length first, then crimp; the joint cannot be adjusted afterwards.
• Check before you fish — Pull-test every crimp by hand. A sleeve that slides, a tag end that creeps, or aluminium cracked along the barrel means cut it off and redo it.
