GAMAKATSU - SINGLE HOOKS 62 VERTICAL HEAVY JIGGING HOOK MADE IN JAPAN
Gamakatsu Single Hook 62 Vertical Heavy Jigging Hook (Made In Japan)
The Single Hook 62 Vertical Heavy is built for deep-water vertical jigging and the powerful fish that come with it. Wire diameter, point angle and point position are calculated to penetrate efficiently without making the hook needlessly thick — a balance that matters when you set a hook through 100 metres of braid, where line drag and rod angle absorb much of the strike. A long throat and stable bend keep the hook seated through long fights, and flat-forged construction strengthens the body around the bend where a big fish loads it hardest. Gamakatsu rates the series from nearshore yellowtail-class fish up to amberjack, tuna and large grouper, including fish over 100 kg. The ringed eye takes assist cord, split rings or solid rings for custom single or twin assist rigs.

How To Rig It
- Why vertical jigging is hard on hooks — The fish is directly below you, so load runs almost straight up the assist cord into the hook eye, not sideways as in casting. That pull works the point along the shank axis and can slowly lever a weak hook open. Add depth — a strike at 80–150 m arrives soft and late — a fight that can run twenty minutes with the drag locked, and boat lift in swell repeatedly loading and unloading the hold, and the case for a thick, forged, long-throat hook is clear.
- Twin assist on the front eye — Bind two hooks on short PE assist cord to a solid ring at the jig head, cord short enough that the points stay within the top third of the jig and cannot swing back and foul it.
- Single assist on long jigs — One hook on a slightly longer cord reduces tangles on long, thin jigs and gives a cleaner release.
- Long-fall and high-pitch — Work the jig off the bottom with rod lift and reel pickup. Most strikes come on the fall; wind down to load the rod before setting rather than striking into slack line.
- Inspect between drops — After every good fish check the point and the cord where it passes through the eye; fish pulled off structure abrade both.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), red snapper (ikan merah), giant trevally (gerepoh), amberjack and dogtooth tuna on deep reef, wrecks and pinnacles.
- North America — Amberjack, grouper and cobia over Gulf and Atlantic wrecks, and yellowtail on Pacific structure off California and Baja.
- Japan & East Asia — Offshore vertical jigging for buri, hiramasa, kanpachi and large ne-zakana over deep reef; also the hook class used when slow pitch tackle is stepped up for heavy targets.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Samson fish and yellowtail kingfish on Australian deep reefs; cobia and grouper (hamour) in the Gulf and Oman; amberjack and dentex on Mediterranean pinnacles.
