Decoy SV-30W Chinu Head White Jig Head — Made In Japan

The SV-30W is the white version of Decoy's Chinu Head, a jig head built for one fish: chinu, the black sea bream that graze barnacles, pipe worms, crabs and shrimp off harbour walls, pilings and rip-rap. That diet is why the colour matters. Anglers fishing this style rig imitation barnacle and pipe-worm baits, and a dark metal head on the nose of a pale imitation reads as foreign material to a fish inspecting food at close range in shallow water. A white head blends into the bait instead of interrupting it, so the rig looks like one object — and it does the same over real barnacles and pipe worms fished on the hook. The round profile suits a wide spread of soft baits, on a high-balance design tuned for a stable fall, and the hook is a strong, sharp pattern specified not to be crushed by a chinu's jaws and shaped to slide to the lip. It carries across to rockfish on the same structure.

How To Rig It

• Rigging the imitation — Thread a barnacle, pipe-worm, tube or small craw bait onto the shank so it sits square and butts against the head. The aim is a continuous silhouette, so leave no gap.
• Vertical along the wall — Drop straight down the face of a harbour wall or piling on a controlled line. Chinu graze tight to structure, and most takes come within a metre of it.
• Lift, drop and hold — Lift the head off the bottom, let it settle, then hold still for several seconds. The hold is what draws a feeding chinu in.
• Read the take, then sweep — A chinu bite is often a series of taps. Wait for solid weight, then sweep rather than snap, and let the hook slide to the lip.
