Decoy Single29 Trailer Single Hook — Made In Japan

The Single29 Trailer Single is a vertical-eye single hook built for the trailer position — the rear hook that hangs behind the main hook or off the tail of a jig, there to catch the fish that swipe short instead of eating the lure properly. It is the hook supplied as standard on the Flash Bomb, Katsuichi's chinu jig, and that origin explains the whole design. Black sea bream (chinu) and flathead have hard, bony jaws, so the pattern uses a round wide gape that makes contact quickly and drives home even on a sweeping hookset rather than a hard strike. Chinu jigs are usually worked over oyster beds and shell bottom, where points blunt fast, which is why this is sold separately as a spare. A micro barb keeps penetration easy, the wide eye leaves room for a split ring, and the NS Black finish keeps the rig quiet for a wary fish. Supplied here in #4, eight per pack.

It is worth being clear about the difference between this and the Single27 Pluggin' Single. The Single27 is a conversion hook for hard baits, where the job is to replace a treble without upsetting the plug's buoyancy or swimming action. The Single29 is not a conversion hook at all — it is a dedicated rear hook for a jig or a bottom-contact lure, chosen for jaw penetration and abrasion life rather than for how it hangs under a plug.

How To Rig It

• Rear hook on a chinu or bottom jig — Fit it to the tail ring of the jig. Hop the jig along the bottom with short lifts and let it fall on a controlled line; chinu take on the drop or as the jig settles, and the take often feels like nothing more than added weight.
• Trailer behind a main hook — Where fish repeatedly hit behind the lure, a short rear single converts those swipes without adding the tangle and snag load of a second treble.
• Carry spares over shell — Oyster beds and rubble blunt a point fast. Check it with a thumbnail regularly and change the hook rather than sharpening it back.
• Sweep, do not strike — Against a bony jaw, a long low sweep of the rod keeps steady load on the single point. A short hard strike is more likely to bounce it off bone.

• Southeast Asia — Fingermark, small grouper (kerapu), mangrove jack and trevally hitting the rear of bottom-hopped jigs around oyster racks, rock walls and jetty legs.
• North America — Sheepshead, black drum, redfish and flounder on jigs worked over shell and rubble, plus smallmouth bass on hopped jigs in rivers.
• Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: chinu-ing (black sea bream on jigs) over oyster beds, and kochi (flathead) on the same bottom-contact retrieve.

Recommended Pairing

• Chinu jigs and bottom-contact jigs of roughly 5–20 g on a light casting or spinning outfit
• PE 0.6–1.0 braid to a 12–20 lb fluorocarbon leader, which handles shell and rock better than nylon
• Split ring sized so the hook swings freely on the tail eye
