Decoy VJ-74 Plus Magic Jig Head — Made In Japan

The VJ-74 Plus Magic is Decoy's small bass jig head for tough, high-pressure water, where fish have seen every standard presentation and will only use their mouth on something that behaves exactly as intended. Its argument is the weight ladder: instead of three or four steps, the factory range runs 0.6, 0.9, 1.4, 1.8, 2.5 and 3.5 g across hook sizes #3 and #2, so you can move one small increment at a time and turn the same worm from a reaction bait into a slow feeding presentation without changing plastic. The keeper is a tube type, which matters more on a small head than a large one: it locks a slim worm through repeated shaking without bulking up the nose or splitting the body. Matt black finish, five heads per pack.

Key Features

  • Small jig head built around high-pressure, tough-lake bass fishing
  • Finely stepped weight range, 0.6 g to 3.5 g, for adjusting presentation in small increments
  • Tube-style keeper that seats small worms cleanly and stops them slipping
  • Matt black finish — a low-glare surface for clear and shallow water
  • Factory range: #3 at 0.6–2.5 g, #2 at 0.9–3.5 g; five heads per pack

What "Plus Magic" Means

  • Magic — the keeper family. Decoy's Magic heads (SV-51 Delta Magic, SV-52 Round Magic, VJ-76 Magic Head) are defined by a worm lock that holds a soft plastic through repeated darting without padding out a thin bait's profile. On the VJ-74 that lock is a tube keeper.
  • Plus — Katsuichi do not gloss the word, so be clear about what it is not: the VJ-74 has no weed guard. It is an open-hook head; the guarded models in the family are the VJ-75 Plus Guard and VJ-77 Plus Guard-S.
  • So: VJ-74 for open water, edges and pressured fish; VJ-75 Plus Guard when the cast has to land inside timber or weed; VJ-31B Violence Ball when the same light weights need a stronger wire.

How To Rig It

  • Threading the worm — Enter the nose dead square, run the hook down the body's centre line and press the plastic back onto the tube keeper. At 0.9 g an off-centre bait spins, and a spinning bait does not get bitten.
  • Work the weight ladder — Start with the lightest head conditions allow. If fish follow but will not take, drop a step; if bites come short, go up a step so the bait arrives faster and triggers a reaction.
  • Slow swim — Count down to the fish, then wind at the slowest speed that keeps you in contact. Speed matters more here than retrieve style.
  • Shake in place — Hold the rod at 10 o'clock and shake the tip so the worm quivers without the head leaving the spot. This is the presentation the fine weight steps exist for.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Hampala barb (sebarau) in clear rocky rivers, peacock bass and tilapia in reservoirs, small barramundi (siakap) at jetty lights.
  • North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass on pressured lakes, plus crappie and perch on finesse worms and small craws.
  • Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: reservoir and canal black bass on bait finesse and light spinning tackle, where the fine weight steps were developed.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass and estuary perch; perch and zander in European canals, gravel pits and rivers.
