Decoy KR-25 Sandworm Hook — Red, Made In Japan

The KR-25 is the sandworm specialist in Decoy's KR series, the Katsuichi light-game singles built around small baits and light tackle rather than lures or heavy terminal work. It is a long-shank, curved-shape hook made for threading soft natural baits — sandworm, bloodworm and prawn tail — so the bait lies straight and keeps moving in the wash. The long shank holds a worm bait without it bunching and gives you something to grip when unhooking small fish. The red finish is the traditional choice for worm baits in Japan, adding a visual trigger at the head of the bait. Five sizes are listed, #6 through #10, all at the small end that suits surf, flats and pier fishing.

How To Rig It

• Threading a sandworm — Enter the point at the head, run the worm up over the shank until it reaches the eye, then leave 2–3 cm of tail hanging free to wriggle. Nip off any excess so the bait cannot fold back over the point.
• Surf and beach rigs — Fish one or two on droppers above the sinker and cast into the gutter between sandbars. Retrieve a metre every thirty seconds to search the gutter rather than leaving the bait in one spot.
• Light pier and flats rig — Run a small ball sinker to a swivel with a 50 cm leader and slow-drag the bait over sand and seagrass edges on a rising tide.
• Setting on small mouths — Do not strike at the first tap. Wait for the tip to load, then lift smoothly; small bait feeders mouth a worm several times before taking it.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — Sand whiting, small grunter, ponyfish and juvenile snapper off beaches, sandflats and jetty pilings, plus tilapia in fresh water.
• North America — Pompano, whiting (kingfish), croaker, spot and small flounder on sand beaches and inshore flats using worm and shrimp baits.
• Japan & East Asia — Kisu (Japanese whiting) is the classic target, fished on a sinker rig from surf and boat; also haze (goby) in estuaries and small mebaru around structure.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Sand whiting, bream and dart on Australian beaches; safi and small emperor on Gulf flats; flounder, dab and plaice on European beaches.
