Decoy AH-6 Area Hook Type VI "Spic" — Made In Japan

The AH-6 Spic is the sixth pattern in Decoy's Area Hook series, the Japanese single hooks Katsuichi build for area trout — the managed still-water ponds where anglers work 1–3 g spoons for stocked rainbows, and where single hooks are usually a condition of fishing. Each pattern answers a different moment in a session, and the Spic answers the busiest one: straight after a release, when fresh fish compete for food and take without hesitation. In that window you do not strike fish; you need a hook that slides in cleanly and holds as the reel keeps turning. A narrow gape and long shank let it slip past the lips of a fish rushing at the spoon, and the geometry favours loading over striking, so it sets itself on the roll of the retrieve — roll hooking, setting by winding rather than lifting. The wire is flat-forged to raise hardness to its limit, finished in NS Black, and EX Fine: where a hook-set-focused pattern uses a delicate point backed by rigidity to convert one fish for certain, the Spic is balanced to stay sharp through a long session.

AH-1, AH-5 And AH-6 — Which One To Tie On

• AH-1 Type I — the original and the all-rounder: a conventional round bend in #6, #8 and #10, black nickel. The default treble-to-single conversion, and the choice when nothing about the session is unusual.
• AH-5 Type V "Kunai" — the angular pattern from the Yajima-type ayu hook: three corners and four straight lines instead of a curve, flat-forged, self-hooking. Sizes #4, #6 and #8, ten per pack. It runs larger because it targets bigger trout cruising the bottom layer on blind spooning.
• AH-6 Type VI "Spic" — the fine-wire numbers hook: narrow gape, long shank, EX Fine, twelve per pack, #6 to #10. For active fish after a release, when the aim is a high hook-up rate over many casts.

How To Rig It

• Rear hook on a spoon — Fit it to the tail split ring, point riding upward. Count the spoon down, then wind at the slowest speed that keeps the blade wobbling; the take registers as the rod loading, not as a knock.
• Let it roll-hook — Do not strike. Keep the rod low and keep winding through the take so the long shank draws the point into the corner of the mouth.
• Fish the busy window — Use it in the hour after a stocking, and whenever fish compete in the upper layer. Change the count in two or three second steps until you find the level, then repeat it.
• Size to the lure — #10 for the lightest micro spoons where hook mass changes the wobble, #8 as the general choice, #6 for larger spoons.

• Southeast Asia — Managed trout ponds are rare here, so it serves as a single-hook conversion on micro spoons for hampala barb (sebarau), tilapia and small stream fish, and at catch-and-release ponds banning trebles.
