Decoy AH-3 Area Hook Type III — Made In Japan
Most of Decoy’s Area Hook series is drawn around the spoon. The AH-3 is drawn around the plug. Area trout anglers carry micro minnows for the sessions when a wound spoon stops working, and those lures need a hook that hangs correctly rather than swinging into the body — hence the vertical eye. The wide gape is the working part: a stocked rainbow inspecting a micro plug often does no more than nudge it, and width turns that contact into a hold. The barb is Katsuichi’s Magic Barbless — nothing to force through tissue, so the point buries on the pressure 2–4 lb line delivers, while the form still resists shaking loose. Katsuichi also recommend it for stream minnows, where fewer points mean fewer snags.
Key Features
- Barbless single hook designed for area micro plugs
- Vertical eye for correct hang under a plug
- Wide gape that turns short, tentative trout bites into hook-ups
- Magic Barbless: easy penetration, better retention than plain barbless
- Matt black finish, fewer snags than a treble; eight hooks per pack
How To Rig It
- Converting a micro plug — Fit it to the belly and tail rings of a 25–45 mm minnow, points riding upward. Check the hooks cannot reach each other, and swim the lure first; a plug that light notices any change in mass.
- Twitch and pause — Work the plug in short twitches and stop it dead. Trout take on the pause, and with no barb the hold depends on tight line.
- Stream minnowing — Cast up and across, retrieve faster than the current, and swing the plug past rocks. One point rides clear of timber that collects a treble.
- Keep tension — A barbless hook drops out on slack line. Keep the rod loaded and net with rubber mesh.
Which Area Hook To Tie On
Japanese anglers split these patterns two ways: with a nose (ノセ) hook you keep winding and the fish loads itself onto the point; with a kake (掛け) hook you feel the bite and set it. The AH-3 sits on the nose side.

Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — No area trout circuit here, but two local uses. Fee-paying ponds under constant pressure increasingly write single-hook or barbless rules into their permits, and a de-trebled micro plug is kinder to fish that will be caught again. It also upgrades light lure fishing: hampala barb (sebarau) and jungle perch on stream minnows, tilapia on ponds, and jetty light game.
- North America — Stocked rainbow, brook and brown trout in put-and-take ponds and on barbless-only river stretches; wild trout on small plugs.
- Japan & East Asia — Home use: area trout on micro plugs, plus yamame and iwana on stream minnows.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Stocked trout in Tasmania and Victoria; commercial fisheries in the UK, Germany and Italy, many barbless-only; perch on small hard baits.
