The CrusteaZ is a 2" crustacean imitation built for the situations where fish are eating small crabs, crayfish, sand fleas and ghost shrimp rather than baitfish. The compact body carries twin U-shaped tail claws that produce action on both fast and slow retrieves, and Z-Man rates the ElaZtech material as buoyant, so the claws lift and wave above the bottom when the lure is sitting still — the defensive posture of a real crab backed into cover. Z-Man also rates ElaZtech at 10X tougher than conventional plastic, which matters when bait-stealers pick at a lure spending most of its time on the bottom. The body can be rigged several ways, but is at its most useful on a Ned rig, a finesse jig, or as a jig trailer. Six per pack, six colours.

How To Fish It

• Ned rig — Thread it onto a 1/10–1/6 oz mushroom head and drag it a few centimetres at a time across sand, rubble or oyster ground, pausing after each pull. The claws stand up while it sits, and most bites come on that pause.
• Finesse jig — Rig on a light weedless finesse jig and hop it down rock walls, breakwaters and bridge pylons. Keep contact on the drop; crustacean feeders take it falling.
• Jig trailer — Add it behind a small skirted or swim jig to widen the profile and slow the fall without killing the action.
• Slow drag for bottom feeders — On a light jig head, crawl it over mud and sand flats on a rising tide with long pauses — the presentation for black bream and other cautious feeders that inspect a lure before eating.

• Southeast Asia — Black bream and mangrove jack over oyster racks and rock walls, grouper and small emperor around jetty footings, plus estuary cod picking crabs off mud flats on the tide.
• North America — Smallmouth and largemouth bass on the Ned rig over rock and gravel, crappie and yellow perch on light heads, and redfish, sheepshead and surf perch on inshore sand and shell.
• Japan & East Asia — Kurodai and kichinu (black seabass) on light bottom finesse tackle around harbour walls, and rockfish such as kasago and mebaru worked slowly over structure.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Black bream, flathead and whiting in southern Australian estuaries; wrasse and sea bream over rocky European ground; small grouper and bream on Gulf structure.
