The Aurie-Q Cloth is Yo-Zuri's traditional cloth-wrapped egi, built on the Oita-style pattern that Japanese squid fishing grew out of — a plain, honest shrimp body with no fins or gimmicks, relying on a good wrap and correct balance. At #1.8 and 5 g this is the second-lightest jig in the whole Aurie-Q range, and weight is the whole story here: 5 g is what you fish when the water is one to three metres deep, the surface is calm, the squid are small or wary, and anything heavier lands with a thump and reaches bottom before it has had a chance to be seen. The premium wrap resists damage from squid beaks and rough ground, and the keel-weighted body still gives a crisp dart despite the low mass.

How To Fish It

• Fish it shallow and slow — A 5 g jig belongs over weed beds, sand flats and jetty edges in a few metres of water. Cast, let it drift down on a controlled bow of line, and expect the take before it ever touches bottom.
• Soft twitches, long pauses — Two or three light flicks with the rod tip low, then stop for five or ten seconds. On light gear the pause is longer than you think it needs to be, and that is where squid commit.
• Sabiki-style dropper — The small body works well on a two-jig branch rig fished straight down beside pilings, lifted a metre and dropped, rather than cast and retrieved.
• Sweep, never strike — Squid wrap the jig with their arms instead of biting. Lean into the weight and wind under constant tension; a hard hook set on 5 g and light line simply pulls the arms off.

• Southeast Asia — Candat sotong for small bigfin reef squid (sotong torak), cuttlefish (sotong katak) and pencil squid from lit jetties, kelong and shallow harbour walls.
• North America — Market squid at California pier lights, where a small slow jig outfishes a heavy one inside the light pool.
