Yamashita Armer 113 g Lead Sutte With Squid Hook

The Armer is Yamashita's ika-metal sutte — a lead-bodied squid jig wrapped in Armor Cloth, a reinforced fabric developed to resist tearing from squid beaks so the body survives a night of repeated hits. At 113 g and 130 mm this is the heavy end of the range, for deep water and strong current: it drops head-first, fast and stable, so the tide does not sweep it off the mark. Where a cloth sutte needs a weight below it, the Armer is the weight — it goes on the end of the line as the main lure, with smaller sutte on branch lines above if you want them.

High-visibility glow and UV finishes carry the jig through low light and depth, while the appeal patterns work in daylight. Twin crown hooks in a corrosion-resistant finish hold squid without tearing the mantle.

Key Features

  • Armor Cloth construction — reinforced fabric that resists tearing from squid beaks
  • 113 g body at 130 mm, for mid- to deep-water boat squid fishing
  • Head-first sinking action for a rapid, stable descent
  • Glow and UV colour options for low light and deep water
  • Twin crown hooks in a corrosion-resistant finish for a secure hold
  • Six colours, from red and white through to UV Carrot and Ukiukiale
  • Built for boat eging and vertical tataki (jerking) techniques

How To Fish It

  • Vertical tataki — Drop to the bottom, shake the rod tip hard for two or three seconds while lifting, then stop dead. Squid attach on the pause, not the shake.
  • Find the layer, then stay in it — Wind up three to five turns between each shake-and-stop until you get a touch, then re-drop straight to that band. Squid hold in narrow layers that shift through the night.
  • Choose 113 g deliberately — This weight is for deep marks, running current and a wind-pushed boat. If the line hangs vertical and the drop feels lifeless, you are over-weighted.
  • Add a dropper — A small cloth sutte on a 20–30 cm branch 40–60 cm above gives squid a softer second option. The Armer supplies the weight and the rhythm.
  • Wind, do not pump — A take registers as extra weight or a tip that stops springing back. Load the rod slowly, then wind at one constant speed — slack line loses squid on barbless crown hooks.
  • Charge the glow — Hold glow and UV bodies under the deck light or a UV torch for 20–30 seconds before each drop and again whenever the glow fades.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Sotong (bigfin reef squid) and cuttlefish on deeper night boat trips from Malaysian, Thai and Indonesian ports, where the tide runs hard over reef edges and wrecks.
  • North America — Humboldt squid on deep Pacific night trips, where a heavy glow body reaches fish holding well below the boat lights.
  • Japan & East Asia — Kensaki-ika, yariika and surume-ika on ika-metal boat trips; this is the fishery the Armer was designed around.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and arrow squid on deeper boat drifts; cuttlefish on Gulf marks; European squid on Atlantic and Mediterranean night grounds.

Recommended Pairing

  • Ika-metal or light boat rod rated to handle 113 g, with a soft, visible tip
  • PE 0.6–1.0 braid with a 2–3 m fluorocarbon leader — thin line cuts current and keeps the jig under the boat
