The O’Shaughnessy is the standard heavy bait pattern — long shank, deep round bend, straight inline point — and the 4140SS is the strongest member of the range. The maker rates it 3X-strong: the wire is two gauges heavier than a standard hook of the same size, forged flat through the bend, on stainless steel. It is the hook you pick when the failure you are guarding against is the hook opening rather than the leader breaking — big grouper wrenching back into a wreck, a ray or shark on a bottom bait.

Where it sits in the 41-series family. The 4143SS is the same stainless O’Shaughnessy in a 2X-strong wire and the same twelve sizes, #4 to #9/0 — the everyday version. How To Rig It

• Whole live or dead bait — Bridle or pin a whole fish for grouper, mulloway and shark work. The long shank carries the bait straight and keeps the leader clear of the jaws.
• Heavy paternoster over wreck and reef — Two short droppers above a heavy sinker. Wind down and lean into the fish; with 3X wire you can lock the drag and turn a fish before it reaches the hole.
• Snelled trolling and drift baits — Snell the ring eye with heavy mono so the pull comes off the shank in line, for slow-trolled squid, garfish and mullet.
