THE ANGLAR - OCTOPUS HOOK PACK 4199 BOTTOM FISHING BAIT HOOK
The Anglar Octopus Hook Pack 4199 Bottom Fishing Bait Hook
An octopus hook — the same family as a beak hook — is short in the shank, wide in the gape and turned in at the point. It is the standard bait hook on jetties and bottom boats through Southeast Asia: it disappears inside a live prawn or a cut strip, and the inward point catches the corner of the jaw as the fish turns away instead of sliding out of a soft mouth. The 4199 adds two details that matter on a slow bottom bite. The point is kirbed — offset sideways from the shank — so it meets the jaw at an angle rather than pulling back along its own line, which finds a hold when a fish takes the bait sideways. The ringed eye is turned up, setting the hook at a working angle when snelled.
The black nickel plating gives corrosion resistance and a dull, low-glare finish in clear water. Treat it as a coated hook: rinse and dry after a trip, because once the coating is scratched or the point filed, salt finds the steel underneath. Stainless patterns need less care but are generally a little softer, while a plated hook usually holds a harder point. Fourteen sizes from #12 to #6/0 cover a whole family of rigs.
Key Features
- Octopus (beak) profile — compact, curved, built around natural bait
- Kirbed shape with an inward-angled point for better hold on the strike
- Eagle Cutting point with sharp angled edges for fast penetration
- Sharp barb to keep the hook seated during the fight
- Turned-up solid ringed eye for snelling and secure leader connections
- Strong rounded bend that spreads load through the hook
- Black nickel coating for corrosion resistance and reduced glare
- Fourteen sizes, #12 through #6/0, ten per packet on the sizes listed
How To Rig It
- Live and dead prawn — Point once through the last tail segment for a lively bait, or thread a peeled prawn onto the shank for distance casting. #6–#1 for small prawn, #1/0–#3/0 for large.
- Cut fish and squid strip — Hook through the skin side twice so the strip streams straight. Keep the bait narrower than the gape or it will block the point.
- Sandworm and small baits — The #12–#8 sizes take a short worm section or a sliver of squid for gelama, whiting and bream on light bottom rigs.
- Paternoster (apollo) or running sinker — Short droppers above the lead for reef and jetty pilings; or a sinker running to a swivel with a long leader on open sand for wary fish.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), snapper (ikan merah) and golden snapper (jenahak) on reef; barramundi (siakap) at jetty pilings; croaker (gelama), catfish (duri), whiting and bream on estuary mud with the small sizes.
- North America — Mangrove and red snapper, grouper, sheepshead, striped bass and catfish; the small sizes suit porgy, croaker and perch on bridges and piers.
- Japan & East Asia — Dozuki (胴突き) dropper rigs for kasago, mebaru and ainame, and bukkomi (ブッコミ) bottom baits for kurodai and anago.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper, bream, whiting and flathead in Australian estuaries; hamour and sheri in the Gulf; cod, pollack and coalfish on European rock marks.
