THE ANGLAR - DX400 SODE HOOK PACK FLATTED 418 BRONZE FISHING HOOK
The Anglar DX400 Sode Hook Pack Flatted 418 Bronze Fishing Hook
Sode (袖, "sleeve") is the classic Japanese small-fish pattern: slim shank, narrow gape, straight point. It is built for fish that take softly and have small mouths, entering with so little resistance that a cautious fish rarely drops the bait. The DX-400 418 is the upgraded build in Anglar's Sode range. Where the plain 4400 is a simple high-carbon hook, this one is forged — the wire is pressed to a flattened section through the bend so it resists opening under load — and the point is an eagle-cutting, chemically sharpened design rather than a plain ground point. It comes in a shorter, gapped size range than the other two Sode patterns, for anglers who want the finesse of the shape with more margin when a better fish takes.
Key Features
- Sode pattern — slim shank, narrow gape, straight point for light, hesitant bites
- Forged bend: reinforced to resist opening or bending under pressure
- Eagle-cutting point with chemically sharpened edges for fast penetration
- Straight point alignment so the pull runs directly through the shank
- Flatted (spade) shank end for snelled, low-bulk rigs
- Bronze finish for a subdued, low-glare presentation
- Eight sizes: #7–#11 and #15–#17
Flatted vs ringed eye. A flatted hook has no eye at all; the shank end is pressed flat so a whipped knot cannot slide off. Nothing sits above the shank, so the rig stays slim and the pull aligns with the point — ideal on fine line. A ringed eye is stronger and takes heavy leader, split rings or snaps, which is why the 484 Plain Shank and the S-75M in this range use one. Fine line and natural bait: flatted. Heavy line or clip-on rigs: ringed.
How To Rig It
- Snell it — Lay the line along the inside face of the shank, whip 6–8 turns down toward the bend, pass the tag back through and pull tight. The line must exit on the inside so the pull lines up with the point; a clinch knot will slip off the flat.
- Prawn and live bait — Nick a prawn once through the tail segment so it keeps working, or hook a small live bait through the nose. The cut point needs less force to set, so lift smoothly instead of striking.
- Bottom and float rigs — Fish on a light running sinker or under a stick float just off bottom. The forged bend is what lets you hold a slightly better fish on this shape.
- Sizing — Japanese gō numbering: the number rises as the hook gets larger. #7–#11 covers pond and river bait work; #15–#17 suits larger baits and bigger mouths. Note the range steps from #11 straight to #15.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Prawn ponds (udang galah), tilapia, javanese carp (lampam) and catfish (keli); small jetty and estuary fish such as bream, whiting and juvenile snapper.
- North America — Bluegill, crappie, yellow perch and stocked trout on worm or dough bait; bullheads on cut bait.
- Japan & East Asia — Funa (crucian carp), oikawa (pale chub) and haze (goby) on fine float and bottom rigs, and general small-fish river work.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowfin bream, garfish and whiting off Australian jetties; small emperor and rabbitfish on Gulf breakwaters; roach, rudd, perch and small bream in European still waters.

Finish: bronze throughout. Bronze is an economical plating for fresh water and short saltwater sessions — it will corrode if left damp after salt use, so rinse and dry opened packets.
Recommended Pairing
- Light to medium-light bait rod with a 1000–2500 spinning reel
- 3–10 lb monofilament or fluorocarbon, snelled direct or to a short dropper
- Choose the 4400 for the same shape at standard shank length, or the DX-406 4406 when a longer shank suits the bait
