Santec X-Popper Topwater Frog Lure 4cm 8.3g

The Santec X-Popper is a hard-bodied topwater lure that combines a frog profile with a cupped popping face. That cup is what separates it from a soft frog: pulled sharply, it scoops air and water and throws a loud splash and a ring of bubbles, so the lure calls fish in by sound as much as by sight. It imitates frogs and baitfish working on or just under the surface, answering pauses, twitches and steady retrieves with noise and surface disturbance that provoke strikes from snakehead, peacock bass, shallow-flat trevally and other surface feeders. At 4cm and 8.3g it is a compact, dense body that casts well on light and medium spinning gear, in six colours.

Key Features

  • Hard body with a cupped popping face for splash and bubble trail
  • Frog-style profile for shallow water, lily pads, weed edges and flooded margins
  • Compact 4cm size at 8.3g, so it casts further than its length suggests
  • Works on pauses, twitches and steady retrieves
  • Six colours covering bright, dark and natural water conditions

How To Fish It

  • Pop and pause — One sharp downward rod stroke to make the cup chug, then stop and count to three. Most strikes come during the pause, not the pop, so resist working it faster.
  • Walk and spit — Short, rhythmic taps with slack line between them so the head swings side to side and spits rather than chugs. The subtler action suits calm mornings and pressured fish.
  • Continuous chugging — In wind, chop or coloured water, pop steadily with no pauses so fish have a constant noise trail to track.
  • Wait on the strike — When a fish blows up, do not strike at the splash. Wait until you feel weight, then sweep the rod sideways, not upwards.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Giant snakehead (toman), striped snakehead (haruan) and peacock bass over lily pads and flooded grass; small trevally and queenfish on shallow flats at dawn.
  • North America — Largemouth bass around pads, laydowns and docks; chain pickerel in weedy backwaters; speckled trout and redfish over shallow grass flats.
  • Japan & East Asia — Largemouth bass (blackbass) on lake weed edges, plus small seabass and chinu chasing surface bait in shallow ports.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Sooty grunter, saratoga and Australian bass in northern impoundments; asp and perch on European rivers in summer; queenfish over Gulf shallows.

Recommended Pairing

  • Light to medium casting or spinning rod with a fast tip for popping and a firm butt for the hookset
  • PE 1–2 braid straight through, or with a 20–30 lb leader; braid is preferred because it lifts line off the water for a clean pop
  • Fish it on a slightly slack line — a tight line kills the side-to-side swing of the head
