This is a finished assist rig rather than a bare hook: a heavy wide-gap worm hook already joined to a short braided assist line built over a stainless-steel wire core, with a black rubber sleeve over the hook-to-assist junction to stop the braid chafing under load. The point of the set is that it removes the whole workshop job — instead of buying hollow-core braid, splicing or whipping a loop, adding a wire trace against teeth and finishing the joint with heat shrink, you take the rig out of the packet and thread it. The wire core gives cut and abrasion resistance where a plain braided assist would part on teeth or a rasping jaw plate, while the braided outer keeps the connection flexible so the hook swings free of the lure. The hook is forged, with a wide worm-hook gap, an Eagle Cutting point and barb, and a ringed eye. Two sets per pack, sizes #5/0 to #12/0.

How To Rig It

• Nose-rig the soft plastic — Pass the point through the nose of a large shad, eel or worm body and back out, so the plastic hangs from the hook and the assist takes the pull. The lure is no longer skewered along the shank, so it stays soft and keeps its action.
• Match the size to the plastic, not the fish — Choose the hook whose gap clears the widest part of the body with the point still exposed. As a rough guide, #5/0 to #6/0 for 4 to 6 inch bodies, #8/0 for 7 to 9 inch, and #10/0 upward for the big paddle-tails and eels used on reef and jig-and-plastic work.
• Use it as a stinger — Clip the assist to the front ring of a metal jig, inchiku or bottom rig so the hook trails beside a soft plastic trailer. Short-biting fish that nip the tail find the point instead of clean plastic.
• Let the wire earn its place — Fish it where a plain assist gets bitten off or sawn through: mackerel, barracuda, big grouper and anything with a hard mouth plate. It is the reason to reach for this set rather than a plain worm hook.
• Set with a sweep — Because the hook hangs on a flexible assist, a hard fast strike can pull the point past the fish. Wind down until the line loads, then sweep and hold steady pressure so the wide gap seats fully.
