Santec Wire Spreader 6239 T-Frame Stainless Steel Bottom Fishing Spreader

The Santec Wire Spreader 6239 is a T-shaped stainless-steel boom that keeps the three parts of a bottom rig physically apart. The main line attaches at the top of the vertical section, the sinker hangs from a swivel at the bottom of it, and the hook leader runs off the end of the horizontal arm. Because the bait is carried out sideways while the lead drops straight down, the trace cannot wrap the main line on the descent or fold back onto the weight in current — the two classic causes of a fouled paternoster. The lower swivel lets the sinker rotate freely to shed line twist, and the centre joint is reinforced with precision-wound wire for heavy work. SUS304 stainless steel handles saltwater use.

This is the three-point model in the Santec spreader range and the one with the widest length span, 30–90 cm. Models 6231 and 6232 are single curved-arm spreaders where the sinker clips to the centre of the wire instead of hanging from its own swivel.

How To Fish It

• Deep-water paternoster — Main line to the top, sinker to the lower swivel, hook leader off the arm end. Drop until the lead lands, then wind up two turns to lift the bait off the bottom.
• Pick the arm length by current — 30–50 cm for slack water and shorter traces; 60–90 cm when a strong drift folds the leader back onto the lead, or when you are running a long trace for wary reef fish.
• Bait on the drift — A live bait on the arm cannot spin up the main line, so the 6239 suits drifting live squid, sardine or prawn over reef and wreck.
• Deep dropping — The reinforced joint takes the load of large sinkers; keep the drop controlled so the arm does not tumble past the lead.

• Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), red snapper (merah), emperor and threadfin over reef, wreck and rig structure on boat rigs.
• North America — Grouper, snapper and black seabass on Gulf and Atlantic bottom rigs; halibut and rockfish on the Pacific coast.
