The Santec Wire Leader Rig is a ready-made stainless steel wire leader with one, two or three rotating branch arms for presenting baits or lures off a single strong trace. Each arm joins the main wire through a spring-wound rotating joint, so the branch turns a full 360 degrees instead of twisting up against the leader, and the twisted-wire arms stand approximately 8 cm clear of the central wire.

When wire earns its place. The real reason to fish a steel leader is teeth. Spanish mackerel (tenggiri), barracuda (ikan alu), wahoo, sharks, cobia and bluefish cut monofilament and fluorocarbon cleanly, often on the take, and you lose the fish and the terminal tackle together. Wire removes that failure. It is not free, though: wire is stiff, visible, and it kills the natural drift of a bait. In clear water, in daylight, on line-shy fish — snapper, grouper on a slow bite, bream, trevally on the flats — wire costs you bites that fluorocarbon would have converted. Fish wire when bite-offs are actually happening or a toothy species is the target; go back to fluorocarbon when the water is clear and the fish are cautious.

How To Fish It

• Vertical bait fishing — Main line to the end swivel, sinker below, one bait per snap. Drop to the mark and hold the rig just off the bottom so each bait swims on its own arm.
• Search the water column — On the 3-way 60 cm rig, put different baits on each arm to find the taking depth, then match all three once fish show.
• Single-bait wire trace — The 1-way 50 cm is the plain anti-bite-off leader: one bait, one snap, minimum hardware, for casting or drifting to mackerel and barracuda.
• Trolling and drifting — The rotating arms let a bait track without spinning line into the leader; keep speed steady so the arms stay out.

• North America — King mackerel, bluefish and small sharks off piers and inshore wrecks; pike and muskie in fresh water.

Recommended Pairing

• Medium to heavy spinning or boat rods, 20–50 lb line or PE 2–4 braid
• Sinker or jig below the rig, matched to depth and current
• Live or cut baits, small jigs or feathered lures on the branch snaps
• Carry a fluorocarbon leader too, and switch back when the bite goes quiet in clear water
