Santec Sutte Squid Hook 3631 — Ultra-R Sutte

The 3631 Ultra-R is the full-bodied sutte in the Santec range: 7 cm and 9.2 g, with a prawn-and-baitfish profile, a reflective mesh-style outer skin and feather side fins. Where a slim sutte is built to cut through current and sink fast, this one is built to be seen and to keep moving. The broader section slows the fall and produces a controlled glide when jigged, while the feather fins keep working during the pause — the part of the retrieve when squid actually commit. A full luminous body and glow-edged eye make it readable at night and at depth, and two circular rows of fine hook points at the rear are set to catch tentacles the moment a squid wraps the bait. It fishes on a branch line off a vertical rig rather than being cast like an egi.

Key Features

  • 7 cm body at 9.2 g — a broader sutte with a slower, more visible fall
  • Full luminous glow body with a glow-edged realistic eye
  • Reflective mesh-style outer finish imitating natural prey texture
  • Feather side fins that keep moving on the rise, the pause and the drop
  • Double multi-prong hook crowns with numerous fine points for tentacle contact
  • Front attachment eye for fast rigging on droppers
  • Five colours: Blue, Green Yellow, Red Head, White and Pink

How To Fish It

  • When to choose it over a slim sutte — Run the 3631 in light to moderate current, in shallower or clearer water, and whenever squid want a bigger, livelier target. The slim 3632 is the one for hard tide and depth; this fuller body hangs longer in the strike zone and shows more movement, which usually matters more when the water is quiet.
  • Dropper above the lead — Tie it to a branch line 30–50 cm above a sinker or a weighted metal squid jig. The lead sets the depth and the rhythm; the cloth-and-feather sutte is usually the one taken.
  • Lift, then hold — Lift smoothly through three to five winds, stop dead, and hold for five to ten seconds while the fins settle. Squid come on the pause and the fall. Move up the column in stages until you locate the layer.
  • Lean, never strike — A take registers as extra weight or a tip that does not spring back. Load the rod slowly and wind at one steady speed all the way in; the points are barbless, so any slack from pumping lets a squid release.
  • Charge the glow — 20–30 seconds under a deck light or UV torch before each drop, repeated as the glow fades.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Sotong torak (bigfin reef squid) and sotong katak (cuttlefish) on night candat sotong trips under boat lights over reef edges, wrecks and jetty ground.
  • North America — Market squid on Pacific night boats and piers, fished for the table or as fresh bait for rockfish and halibut.
  • Japan & East Asia — Kensaki-ika, yariika and aoriika on ika-metal and traditional sutte rigs; the same pattern is fished in Korea and Taiwan.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and arrow squid from boats and deep jetties; cuttlefish on Gulf marks; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean night grounds.

Recommended Pairing

  • Light boat or ika-metal rod with a soft tip so the pause can be held without lifting the bait
  • PE 0.6–1.0 braid with a 2–3 m fluorocarbon leader; branch lines lighter than the main leader
  • 2500–3000 size spinning reel with a smooth start-up drag
  • Fish above a squid sinker or a 55–150 g weighted metal squid jig; pair with the slim 3632 on a second dropper to test two profiles at once
