Santec Spring With Sinker 30g Matabom

This is a bait-holding spring moulded onto a 30 g lead sinker — the terminal component behind the Malaysian matabom style of bottom fishing. Instead of hanging a single bait on a hook, you pack a ball of dough, bread, prawn paste or ground pellet around the coiled spring, cast the whole thing out, and let it sit. On the bottom the bait softens and breaks apart around the lead, releasing a slow cloud of scent and particles in one tight spot.

How To Rig It

• Build the matabom rig — Tie the spring sinker to the end of the main line or below a swivel. Attach two or three short hook snoods of 8–15 cm just above or beside the spring so the hooks sit against the bait ball.
• Pack the bait — Mix dough, bread, prawn paste or pellet to a firm, sticky consistency. Press it around the spring until the coils are buried, then tuck the hooks into the outside of the ball. Too wet and it flies off on the cast; too dry and it never breaks down.
• Cast and wait — Lob it, do not whip it. Let it settle, take up the slack and leave the rod on a rest with a slight bend. The bait breaks down over 10–20 minutes; recast and repack once the tip stops showing small taps.
• Place it accurately — Repeat casts to the same spot. The method depends on building one concentrated feed patch, so accuracy beats covering water.

Bottom Fishing By Region

• Southeast Asia — The core matabom application: freshwater catfish (ikan keli), carp (ikan lampam), tilapia and mixed pond species in Malaysian, Indonesian and Thai ponds and canals; also off jetties for catfish (ikan duri).
• North America — The same idea as a spring or coil feeder on a catfish rig: pack punch bait or dough and fish it static in rivers, lakes and farm ponds for channel catfish and common carp.
• Japan & East Asia — Comparable to dango-style packed-bait bottom fishing for carp and crucian carp (herabuna).
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — European method-feeder fishing for carp, bream and tench works on the same principle; in Australia it suits carp and freshwater catfish, and in the Gulf tilapia on packed paste.
