Santec Soft Attack 80mm / 100mm / 120mm Squid Jig — 3616

The Soft Attack 3616 is an egi — a weighted, shrimp-shaped squid jig that is cast or dropped, worked with sharp upward jerks, then allowed to glide back down on its own. The squid takes it on that fall, wrapping its arms around the body rather than biting it. The soft cloth skin over the weighted core lands quietly and keeps the jig nose-down through the glide instead of dropping flat. Three sizes cover shallow jetty work through to deeper, faster ground, and the finishes run from a full-glow White Luminous for night sessions to a Red Head that reads as a solid silhouette in coloured water.

How To Fish It

• Pick the size for the water — #2.0 is the shallow, calm and clear-water choice: sheltered jetties, seagrass edges and small to medium squid that shy off a bulky jig. #2.5 is the all-round size for a few metres of water with some tide. #3.0 sinks fastest and holds its line in current — deeper marks, windy nights, and squid running big.
• Sink count first — Let the jig fall on a controlled slack line while counting seconds. Add five to the count each cast until a squid comes, then repeat that count — squid stack in layers, and the count is how you get back to one.
• Jerk, then let it glide — Two or three sharp upward snaps to dart the jig forward, then drop the rod tip and let it glide down for several seconds. The jerks pull squid in; the fall is what they grab.
• Lean, never strike — When the line stops falling, goes light or drifts sideways, sweep smoothly into the weight and wind at one steady speed. A hard hookset tears tentacles off, and slack from pumping lets a squid release.
• Work the shadow line at night — Cast past the lit water and bring the jig back along the dark edge, recharging the glow finish under a lamp before each cast.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on candat sotong trips off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, plus lit jetties and breakwaters across Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
• North America — Market squid off California piers, moorings and lit harbours, often taken as fresh bait before a rockfish or halibut session.
• Japan & East Asia — Aoriika on shore eging, kensaki-ika and yariika on boat drifts; the same jigs are fished off breakwaters in Korea and Taiwan.
