Santec Seabazz Bending 32g / 42g / 52g Octopus Hook

The Seabazz Bending is a weighted octopus jig — the class of lure the Japanese call tako-egi, fished on the bottom rather than through the water column. Santec builds it on a bent body form rather than a straight one, and lists it in three weights, 32 g, 42 g and 52 g, so the same shape can be fished from a shallow rock ledge through to deeper, tide-swept ground. All six finishes are luminous, which is the point of the design: octopus and squid hunt close to the bottom in poor light, and a glowing body is far easier for them to find than a painted one. It is fished with bottom contact — crawled and hopped along structure — and takes squid as readily as octopus when worked a little higher.

How To Fish It

• Match the weight to depth and tide — 32 g suits shallow ledges, harbour walls and light current. 42 g is the general-purpose weight. 52 g holds bottom on deeper marks, in running tide and on a drifting boat, where a lighter jig lifts off and stops working.
• Crawl it on the bottom — Octopus are found on the bottom, not above it. Drop until the line goes slack, then drag the jig slowly over rock and rubble with the tip low, pausing every metre or so. Most takes come during those pauses.
• Hop and hold for squid — Worked a metre or two off the bottom with a smooth lift and a five to ten second hold, it fishes as a squid jig. Squid take on the pause and the fall, so hold the rod still and watch the line.
• Steady pressure, no strike — An octopus take feels like a snag that is moving; a squid take just feels heavy. Lean into it to lift the animal clear, then wind at one speed — slack lets an octopus re-grip the reef and a squid release.
• Recharge the glow — 20–30 seconds under a lamp or UV torch before each drop, and again whenever the glow dulls.

• Southeast Asia — Octopus (kurita) over rocky ground, jetty pilings and breakwaters, plus sotong torak and sotong katak on candat sotong trips when the jig is worked off the bottom.
• North America — Octopus over rocky Pacific structure and market squid around lit piers and moorings, subject to local rules on take.
• Japan & East Asia — Madako on tako-egi rigs from boats and breakwaters, and kensaki-ika and yariika where the jig is fished as a weighted squid lure.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Maori octopus and southern calamari on Australian reef and jetty ground; common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and cuttlefish on Mediterranean, Atlantic and Gulf rock marks.
