The maruseigo (丸セイゴ) is a description rather than a brand name: maru for the rounded bend, seigo for the juvenile Japanese sea bass the shape was ground for. What that gives you is an evenly rounded bend carried on a shank noticeably longer than a chinu or an octopus hook. The extra shank is working length. A worm, a squid strip or a live prawn lies along it stretched out and natural instead of balled into the bend, long baits cast straight rather than folding back over the point, and when the fish is alongside there is bare steel to grip with pliers well clear of the leader knot.

Santec builds the 45707 in high-carbon steel with a forged body and a black nickel coating. Two details define this version. The point is a chemically sharpened Eagle Cutting geometry — angled cutting faces rather than a plain cone, so it starts a hole instead of pushing one open. And it is set offset to the shank, which is exactly what a long-shank hook wants: a point sitting on the centreline of a long lever can skate out of the side of a mouth before it bites, while an offset point finds purchase as the fish turns. The wide, generous bend leaves clearance once a thick bait has taken its share, and the ringed eye takes a knot in heavy mono or snells cleanly. Ten sizes cover #8 to #20 at a flat fifteen hooks per pack through #14, so it is a practical bulk hook for bottom rigs you tie by the dozen and lose to snags.

How To Rig It

• Live prawn or small baitfish — Pin a prawn through the head horn ahead of the dark spot, or a baitfish through the nose, and swim it past bridge lights, jetty pilings and river mouths on a free line or a light running sinker.
• Surf and estuary dropper rig — Two snelled droppers above the lead with worm, squid or cut fish. Thread the bait up the shank so it lies straight; a long bait folded over the bend will cost you the hook-up.
• Sliding float on the tide — Stopper knot, sliding float and a short trace worked along breakwaters and rock walls. Let the bait swing with the current rather than anchoring it.
• Setting it — Wind down until you feel the fish, then lift steadily. An offset long-shank hook rolls into the jaw on pressure; a hard strike into slack line just pulls the bait away.
