Santec CHW Wire Lead Weight Sinker

The Santec CHW is a wire lead — a lead body fitted with a wire that grips the line, rather than a fixed bore the line is threaded through. That one difference changes how the weight is used. A drilled sinker must be threaded on before the terminal end is tied, so it lives where the rig was built; a wire lead is set on the line wherever suits the moment, slid up or down, added or taken off, without cutting a knot. It is the sinker for adjusting a rig while you fish it: a running weight above the leader, trim weight to sink a float or bait deeper, or an extra piece clipped on when the tide picks up and the bait starts lifting — and taken off again when the flow eases. Sixteen sizes, CHW-1/4 through CHW-18.

How To Rig It

• Sliding weight above the leader — Fit the lead on the main line above the swivel. It slides down onto the swivel on the cast and the bait fishes below, and weight is changed on the spot instead of by rebuilding the rig.
• Trimming a float — Add the light codes one at a time until the float sits at the waterline you want; CHW-1/4 and CHW-1/2 are the fine-shotting sizes.
• Sizing — No gram or ounce figure is printed for the CHW codes, so treat them as relative steps: 1/4 and 1/2 for fine shotting, 1 to 4 for light float and freshwater work, 5 to 9 for estuary and jetty rigs, 10 to 18 for deep water, strong current and long casts. Go up a code whenever the lead drifts.
