The Santec 7925 is a butterfly crane swivel in a nickel finish, supplied in one heavy size, #10/0, three pieces to a pack. A crane swivel sits in the middle of the swivel ladder: a rolling swivel is the cheap everyday workhorse, a crane keeps turning under heavier and more sustained load, and a ball-bearing swivel turns most freely of all at the highest cost. The butterfly form widens the centre of the body between the two eyes, so the junction is easier to grip with wet hands or pliers than a slim barrel. At #10/0 this is a terminal fitting for heavy work — big baits, heavy sinkers and lures that put constant rotation into the line.

How To Use And How To Choose

• Where it goes — Between main line and leader, or between leader and a heavy trace. It is the joint you rebuild at the boat without cutting into the main line.
• Knots — Palomar or a doubled uni to the top eye on braid; improved clinch below on mono or fluorocarbon. On very heavy leader material a crimped sleeve is more reliable than a knot.
• Crane or rolling? — Choose a crane whenever the line rotates continuously: trolling skirts and diving lures, spinning blades, drifted baits in current, or a sinker rolling along the bottom. A rolling swivel handles casual twist only.
• When the swivel is the weak point — Undersize it and it fails first. Salt left on plating overnight stiffens the barrel, so rinse the rig and retire any swivel that no longer spins freely by hand.
• Sizing rule — Match the swivel to line class and bait weight, not to the fish you hope to meet.
