The Santec Bullet-Pencil is a compact soft-body topwater lure built to imitate a distressed baitfish skipping across the surface. Despite the pencil name it is not a hard plug: the body is a soft, squeezable hollow shell that compresses when a fish clamps down, so the twin upward-facing hooks are driven clear on the strike instead of being blocked by a rigid body. Because the hook points sit tight against the back of the lure, it can be worked through lily pads, weed and flooded timber far more confidently than a treble-hooked pencil. The streamlined bullet profile keeps casts accurate in wind, and short rod-tip twitches make it swing side to side in a true walk-the-dog rhythm. At 6 cm and 6.5 g in six colours, it suits light and medium spinning or casting gear.

How To Fish It

• Walk the dog — Point the rod tip down and give short, rhythmic downward taps with a little slack between each one. The slack is what lets the nose swing; a tight line kills the walk and drags the lure straight.
• Over the mats — Cast past a weed mat or pad field and walk it right across the top. The soft body and body-hugging hooks let it come over cover a hard pencil would foul on.
• Stop and go — Two or three walking taps, then a full pause of two to three seconds. Fish tracking the lure often commit only when it stops dead.
• Wait on the strike — Do not swing at the splash. Let the fish load the rod, then sweep sideways — with a soft body the fish holds on longer, so the extra half-second costs nothing and gains a hook-up.
