Santec BlackRed 8cm / 10cm / 12cm Squid Jig — 3633

The BlackRed 3633 is an egi: a shrimp-shaped, weighted squid jig that is cast out, snapped forward with the rod, then allowed to fall back on its own. The squid takes it during that fall, wrapping its arms around the body rather than biting it. A lead sinker under the head keeps the jig descending nose-down instead of dropping flat, and the fabric-covered body holds light well — luminous versions stay visible in dark water once charged with a torch, and the UV-reactive finishes come alive in deep or cloudy water. Large reflective eyes with glow edging give the squid a strike target, feathered side fins keep moving in the pause, and a rear stainless crown catches tentacles from several angles. Three sizes and a very wide colour range let you match depth, current and how the squid are feeding.

Key Features

  • Fabric-covered egi body with a curved, shrimp-like profile
  • Luminous finish that glows after being charged under a light
  • UV-reactive colours for deep, stained or low-light water
  • External lead sinker for a controlled, head-down fall
  • Sharp stainless rear crown hooks and a stainless front connection ring
  • Three sizes — #2.0, #2.5 and #3.0 — and 31 colour patterns

How To Fish It

  • Choose the size for the water — #2.0 (8cm, 7.8g) is the shallow, clear and calm choice for sheltered jetties and seagrass edges, and the one shy squid accept when a bigger jig spooks them. #2.5 (10cm, 11.3g) is the everyday size for a few metres of water with some tide. #3.0 (12cm, 15.6g) sinks fastest and holds its line in current, wind and deeper marks.
  • Count the sink — Let the jig fall on a controlled slack line while counting seconds, adding five to the count each cast until a squid comes. Squid sit in layers, and the count is how you return to one.
  • Snap, then let it glide — Two or three sharp upward rod snaps dart the jig forward and sideways; drop the tip and let it fall for several seconds. The snaps pull squid in, the fall is what they grab.
  • Sweep, never strike — When the line stops falling, goes light or slides sideways, sweep smoothly into the weight and wind at one steady speed. A hard hookset tears tentacles and slack loses squid.
  • Colour by conditions — Bright pinks and oranges for coloured water and dawn or dusk, crystal and natural tones in clear daylight, glow patterns after dark. Recharge a glow body under a lamp before each cast.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on candat sotong trips off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, and from lit jetties across Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
  • North America — Market squid off Californian piers, moorings and lit harbours, often taken as fresh bait before a rockfish session.
  • Japan & East Asia — Aoriika on shore eging, kensaki-ika and yariika on boat drifts; the same jigs are fished from Korean and Taiwanese breakwaters.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari over seagrass in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid on Mediterranean night marks; cuttlefish off Gulf harbour walls.
