Santec Bending Squid Hook 25g / 35g / 55g — 3613

The 3613 is a sutte-type weighted squid and octopus jig — dropped straight down on a vertical line rather than cast out and glided back like an egi. The body carries its own lead, so it sinks nose-down under control even when tide pushes across the boat, and the luminous glow finish charges under a torch or deck light and keeps working below the depth daylight reaches. What separates it from a plain crown jig is the hook geometry: twelve stainless-steel points sit in a crown around the tail, each bent inward rather than left straight, so as a squid wraps its tentacles and pulls, the points draw toward the centre instead of sliding out. A strong central binding ring holds the crown evenly spaced under that load, and three weights cover the difference between a sheltered jetty and a deep drift in running water.

How To Fish It

• Pick the weight for depth and current — 25g suits shallow, slack water: lit jetties, harbour walls and calm anchored drops where a heavier jig falls past the squid. 35g is the general boat weight for moderate depth with some tide. 55g is for deep marks, strong current or wind, where a lighter jig blows off vertical and you lose contact.
• Drop, find bottom, then search upward — Touch down, wind up two or three turns and start working. Squid hold at different heights on different nights, so climb a few turns at a time rather than staying at one level.
• Short lifts, long dead pauses — Lift the tip about half a metre, then stop and let the jig hang. The lift draws squid in; the still pause is when they take hold.
• Lean into it, never strike — When the rod loads slowly or the line drifts sideways, sweep smoothly into the weight and wind at one constant speed. Squid hold on rather than hook in the jaw, and slack lets them release.
• Charge the glow — Hold a torch against the body for twenty to thirty seconds before each drop, and work the dark edge of a boat light rather than the bright middle.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on night candat sotong trips off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, plus octopus over rubble and reef edges.
• North America — Market squid dropped down pilings at Californian piers and harbours; octopus over rocky bottom where local rules permit.
• Japan & East Asia — Kensaki-ika and yariika on boat drops, sumi-ika and octopus (tako) on vertical sutte work, and the same style from Korean and Taiwanese boats.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari over deeper seagrass in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid and octopus on Mediterranean night marks; cuttlefish off Gulf harbour walls.
