The Magnum X Minnow is the heavy end of the S.A.S minnow range — a large floating hard lure with a long front diving lip, built for full-sized baitfish imitation in open salt water. The weights are the headline: 25g in a 110mm body and 39g in a 130mm body are dense for lures of that length, and that density is what lets you cast off a rock ledge into an onshore wind and still reach fish. The long lip pulls the lure well under on a straight retrieve and gives a strong, wide swimming action you can feel in the rod; twitch it and the body darts hard off line. Because it floats, it climbs back toward the surface the moment you pause, letting you walk it up over bommies and rock shelves instead of hanging it up.

Which Size

• 110mm / 25g — The general-purpose size. Enough weight for distance off a beach or breakwall, with a profile small enough that estuary barramundi, queenfish and school trevally take it readily. Also the size for big peacock bass and toman in fresh water.
• 130mm / 39g — The heavy shore-casting and trolling size. The extra 14g buys distance from an exposed headland in wind, and the bigger silhouette interests large mackerel, GT and barracuda that ignore smaller lures. It is also the better troller, holding a stable track at speed.

How To Fish It

• Cast and slow-roll — Long cast, wind hard for several turns to drive the lip down, then settle into a slow, even retrieve. You should feel the lure thumping in the rod; if you cannot, wind faster.
• Sweep and pause over structure — Long sweeps of the rod followed by a stop. The lure rises, clears the reef, and is eaten as it starts down and forward again.
• Trolling — Run it behind the boat along drop-offs, headlands and current lines. Set depth with the length of line you let out, and keep boat speed low enough that the lure holds a steady swimming action rather than spinning.

• Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap) at river mouths and jetties, Spanish mackerel (tenggiri) and queenfish (talang) off headlands, giant trevally (gerepoh) from rock ledges, and peacock bass or toman on the 110mm.
• North America — Striped bass and bluefish in the surf, snook and tarpon on inshore structure, king mackerel on the troll, and muskie or large pike on the 130mm.
• Japan & East Asia — Seabass (suzuki) on shore casting from surf and river mouths, plus hirame and small yellowtail off open coast.
