The MF Leaf Frog is the odd shape in the range. Instead of the rounded jump-frog body used by most of the family it has a broad, flattened leaf-like outline with a wide head, a raised back and prominent red eyes, so its 7g is spread over a much larger footprint than the weight alone suggests. At 4.5cm the loading works out at about 1.6g per centimetre — low for a resin frog, and less than three-quarters of what the sinking MF Smooth Frog carries in the same body length. Combined with the wide underside, that gives it the flattest, highest float in the group. It planes onto the top almost immediately, holds the surface at a crawl that would let a denser frog sink away, and rides over matted grass and lily leaves rather than nosing into them. It also throws a wide, flat shadow, which is what a fish sitting under a weed mat actually sees. Flexible silicone skirt strands spread and pulse on the retrieve and keep working through the pause, and the rear double hook lies close along the body for lower exposure in vegetation. No lure is completely snag-free.

How To Fish It

• Creep the mat — Cast well past a weed mat or pad field and wind just fast enough to keep the body moving over the leaves. The flat hull lets it slide across vegetation instead of dropping between the stems.
• Twitch and hang in the holes — When it reaches an opening in the salad, stop and give two or three small twitches on the spot. Because it floats high it can be worked in one place for several seconds without leaving the hole.
• Shade patrol in the heat — Through the middle of the day fish tuck under pads and floating leaves. Work the lure over that shaded canopy and pause it at every gap and every edge.
• Steady wake along a weed line — On open water beside the vegetation, a plain slow retrieve pushes a visible V-wake that pulls fish out from cover.
• Set on the weight, not the splash — Wait until you feel the fish load the rod, then sweep sideways. Striking upward at the boil pulls the lure away before the double hook has cleared the body.

• Southeast Asia — Striped snakehead (haruan) in lotus, paddy fields and drains; giant snakehead (toman) around weed edges; peacock bass in lily pockets; hampala barb (sebarau) on shallow, vegetated river margins.
• North America — Largemouth bass over hydrilla, milfoil and pad fields; chain pickerel in weedy shallows; northern snakehead in vegetated tidal creeks.
• Japan & East Asia — Snakehead (raigyo) fished over hishimo and other floating weed mats on canals and irrigation ponds, and black bass in shallow reservoir weed.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Saratoga in lily-covered billabongs and sooty grunter in creek pools; pike and perch over weed beds and lily beds in European lakes and canals.

Recommended Pairing

• Medium to medium-heavy casting rod — enough power to lift a fish up out of weed, with a tip that still casts 7g accurately into small gaps
• 30–50 lb braid straight through when fishing over mats and pads; there is no room for stretch when a fish buries into stems
• Short fluorocarbon leader only in clear, open water beside the weed line
• A rod length of around 7ft or more helps steer the lure over the top of vegetation and keeps line off the leaves
