The MF Fire Rep is the heavy hitter of this group. At 10.5g it is the most massive lure here in absolute terms, and its 5.5cm body works out at roughly 1.9g per centimetre — dense enough to cast a long way and hold a low, straight trajectory in wind, but spread over more length than the compact resin frogs, so it planes onto the surface quickly instead of ploughing. Unlike a conventional buzzbait with the blade on an offset arm, the metal propeller assembly sits directly in front of the body on the same axis, so the body slides along behind the turning blades rather than being dragged sideways of them. The result is a lure that throws splash and noise from the front while presenting a settled, tracking silhouette behind — useful on big, wary fish that will swipe at a commotion but not at something skating erratically. An internal rattle adds sound under the surface noise, the silicone skirt spreads and pulses behind the body, and the whole lure is built on stainless-steel through-wire with a removable 3/0 double hook and weed guard, so the hook can be replaced or changed to suit the situation. No lure is completely snag-free. Each piece is handmade and individually painted, so small variations in color, pattern, skirt arrangement and weight occur between lures.

How To Fish It

• Wind on landing — Start the retrieve as it hits so the blades come up and the body climbs onto the surface. A pause early in the retrieve drops the lure out of its working plane.
• Hold one speed — Once it is planning, find the slowest speed that keeps the blades turning cleanly and hold it. A constant sound signature over a long retrieve is what pulls fish up from cover.
• Run the weed wall — Cast parallel to reed lines, grass edges and drowned timber so the lure passes within a rod length of cover for the whole retrieve and let the blades clip the edges.
• Cover distance — Its weight is the reason to pick it over the lighter frogs. Use it to reach the far side of a reservoir arm, cast into a headwind, or search a large flat quickly before slowing down with a smaller lure.
• Fish first and last light — Prop baits earn their keep at dawn, dusk and after dark, when fish hunt by sound and by silhouette against the sky.
