The Bufo Let's Go V.4 is a 100% handmade topwater frog on the larger 5cm body, at 11g. It shares the long silhouette and wide side-to-side sweep of the 5cm V.3, V.5 and V.9, but it is the lightest of that group — and at the same body length, a gram is felt as float height rather than as casting range. The V.4 rides slightly higher in the film, lands softer, and starts working at a marginally slower retrieve speed. That makes it the placement bait of the 5cm frogs: the one to throw into gaps in vegetation, under overhanging banks and along pond and canal edges where the cast has to land quietly and in the right spot, rather than simply reach as far as possible. The colourful hard body gives fish a clear target in shallow water, and a flexible silicone skirt spreads and moves behind it. Its rear hooks sit close to the body for light grass and surface cover, though no lure is completely snag-free.

How To Fish It

• Accurate short casts — Its strength is placement, not distance. Aim at the gap in the pads, the shaded pocket under a bush, the corner where a drain meets a canal; the softer landing avoids spooking fish in thin water.
• Steady surface swim — Wind at a constant unhurried speed for continuous surface movement. Sitting a touch higher than the V.3, it keeps its action at slower speeds without ploughing.
• Twitch, pause, repeat — Short rod-tip twitches for irregular frog-like action, then a two- to three-second stop. The 5cm body swings wide, so leave slack and let each sweep finish.
• Work the edge — Cast parallel to a grass line or reed wall and keep the lure within a rod length of it for the whole retrieve, instead of pulling out into open water.
• Pause before setting — Striking at the splash pulls a hard body clear. Wind through the blow-up, wait for the rod to load with the fish, then sweep sideways.
